Be honest, when was the last time you actually used that paddle board, set of golf clubs, or camping tent that's currently wedged behind the wheelie bin?
If the answer is ‘since before the kids started school,’ you're not alone.
Hull's weather doesn't exactly stick to a tidy seasonal script, which means most of us are juggling kit for three seasons at once in a garage, hallway, or spare room that simply wasn't built for it.

The good news? You don't need to choose between keeping your gear and keeping your home liveable.
With a bit of planning and the right storage you can free up space all year round while keeping your equipment in the condition it deserves.
What's actually worth storing?

More than you'd think. The usual suspects pile up fast once you start counting:

• Non petrol/electric bikes and scooters that only come out in the warmer months
• Golf bags, cricket kit and tennis gear sitting idle over winter
• Camping and festival kit inc. tents, sleeping bags, gazebos, cool boxes
• Water sports and beach gear: boards, wetsuits, kayaks
• Winter sports kit such as skis, snowboards, thermal layers once the season ends
• Bulky hobby equipment: musical instruments, craft supplies, gym equipment

If it only earns its keep for a few months a year, it's a prime candidate for storage rather than a permanent fixture in your hallway.
How to store it properly

Gear that's stored badly comes out of hibernation in worse shape than it went in, so a little prep goes a long way:

• Clean and dry everything first, damp tents and salty wetsuits invite mould and corrosion
• Deflate what you can (paddleboards, footballs, airbeds) to save space
• Use breathable bags or boxes rather than sealed plastic, especially for fabric and leather
• Protect sharp edges and moving parts items like golf clubs, bike chains, ski bindings with covers or light oil
• Label boxes by season so future-you isn't unpacking ski boots in July

Just as important as how you store it is where. A damp garage or a leaky shed can undo all that careful prep within a season, which is exactly the problem a dedicated storage unit solves clean, dry, and secure, with space designed for awkward, bulky items rather than squeezed in as an afterthought.
When should you actually do it?

The best time is the moment a season's gear stops earning its space, not six months later when you're tripping over it daily.
As the weather turns, swap out: box up the summer kit, bring the winter gear forward, and let your home breathe again.
Because access matters too, especially when next season rolls around faster than expected.
